West Coast Leadership Conference
Deadline to Register: October 25, 2008

Young Americas Foundation hosts an annual conservative convention on the West Coast in the beautiful town of Santa Barbara, right on the Southern California coast. This years conference will be Friday through Saturday, November 14-15. The West Coast Leadership Conference—with hundreds of conservative students from around the country—is one of the best ways to meet prominent conservatives, network with fellow passionate young conservatives, and have fun while at the same time learning more about politics.

Last years speakers included high-profile figures such as Attorney General John Ashcroft, Executive Producer of the TV show 24 (and Berkeley alum) Joel Surnow, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, and conservative activist and author Dinesh DSouza. Confirmed so far for this year are Congressman Mark Souder, Kirby Wilbur, and Michael Reagan. This years convention will certainly not disappoint—it is truly not an event to be missed!

Since Young Americas Foundation generously subsidizes the event very heavily, the cost for lodging and food is only $60—a huge bargain given how awesome the convention is and how nice the hotel rooms are and how gourmet the food is! The deadline to sign up at this price is October 25, 2008.

Campaign for John McCain in Reno!
Friday-Sunday, October 17-19, 2008

We are planning a trip to Reno to campaign for our Republican candidate for President, Senator John McCain! The trip—to a verifiable battleground state—is going to be a great help to the McCain campaign and a lot of fun for us (and a chance to help make history and decide the important fate of our future). It is scheduled to take place this weekend of October 17-19. Lodging and most food costs will be covered.

Apparently there has also been quite a number of Obama supporters out there campaigning for him, so come help us out in this contested area!!

Daniel Pipes speaking at Boalt Hall
"The Threat to Israels Existence- Why Its Back, How to Deal with It"--7 pm in 105 Boalt Hall

This week, instead of our regular meeting, BCR will be encouraging its members to attend a talk held by Tikvah: Students for Israel with the conservative scholar Daniel Pipes.

Daniel Pipes is the founder and director of the Middle East Forum, an organization that "promotes American interests in the Middle East" and sponsors websites such as Campus Watch. He received his Ph.D. in History from Harvard University and has since taught there. Pipes served in the U.S. government as a board member of the U.S. Institute of Peace and director of the Foreign Policy Research Institute. He has written 12 books on the Middle East, Syria, and Islam and writes a column for the Jerusalem Post.

He has had his work published by many newspapers across North America, including the Washington Post, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal. Pipes is frequently invited to discuss the Middle East on American network television, as well as by universities and think tanks, has appeared on the BBC and Al Jazeera, and has lectured in 25 countries.

The Wall Street Journal calls Pipes "an authoritative commentator on the Middle East" and according to the New York Times, "Among his supporters, Mr. Pipes enjoys a heroic status; among his detractors, he is reviled."

Wafa Sultan Speaks Out
Wednesday, October 15, 2008 7:45 pm, 60 Evans

In order to bring more awareness about the issues Islamofascism, BCR is hosting Wafa Sultan to speak about Womens Rights in the Middle East. This should be quite the event to see!

Wafa Sultan is a Syrian-American psychiatrist and womens rights activist who grew up in the Middle East in a devout Muslim family. After witnessing her world-renowned college professor being gunned down and killed by Islamic extremists before her very eyes while in class as a student at the University of Aleppo, Wafa began to question the society she had grown up in.

She eventually became a skeptical critic of what she saw as the pervasive "barbarism" and "backwardness" which permeated much of her native culture, and determined herself to speak out against the injustice caused by extremism.

In May of 2006, Dr. Sultan was named as one of Time Magazines "100 People Who Shape Our World." Time Magazine states that "Sultans influence flows from her willingness to express openly critical views on Islamic extremism that are widely shared but rarely aired by other Muslims."

*No fliers, banners, posters, or signs will be permitted at the event, and bags may be searched.

Independence Day
This day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the day that the American colonies decided that they would no longer tolerate being ruled by a foreign king imposing arbitrary, excessive taxation on the populace. It signifies all the great historic roots of our country: independence, freedom, and limited government. Let us all thank God that we live in such a wonderful country as this, and that our founding fathers had the guts to stand up for what they believed in, even if it meant war.
